In the Name of Allah, The Merciful, The Compassionate

The Mujahideen brothers are on their way to Eid Prayer. Happy Eid: for all Muslims.
It is Eid Al-fitr Al-Mubarak for the year 1430.

This is from Afghanistan, brothers. It is the prayers of Al-Eid Al-Mubarak.

In the name of Allah, the Merciful and Compassionate

Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the Worlds, our multiple gratitude that which fills Heaven and earth and everything in between, and to fill everything You want thereafter You are all Glory and Splendor. The most truthfulness ever said by a worshipper, and we are all your slaves. O God, that which You Give no one can stop, and no one can give that which you have stopped, and You not will benefit anyone from their wealth and glory, but from their hard and sincere work. I bear witness that there is no God but God alone with no partner, and Mohamed is His worshipper and messenger, and therefore:

Oh dearly beloved ones, let us pause and evaluate this blessed and exalted generation, the unique and wonderful generation. There is no generation in history that resembles the generation of the companions. May God, the Most High bless them. Our Lord, the Most High, praised the companions in the Holy Quran. What a great praise it is. Allah, the Most High praises them. He said “Allah’s Good Pleasure was on the Believers when they swore Fealty to thee under the Tree: He knew what was in their hearts.” He knew how their hearts were faithful and truthful and how true was their faith, “He knew what in their hearts, and He sent down Tranquility to them; and He rewarded them with a speedy Victory.” Our Prophet, Allah blesses him, his family, and his friends praised his century. He said “The best century [ever] is my century.” It means that best of all the centuries of all humanity was the century of his companions, may the consent of God, the Most High be for them. They had the purest hearts and minds. May the consent of God, the Most High be for them!

Oh dear loved ones, let us look attentively to the realities of the companions. How did they live? Today’s speech would be about the companions, may the consent of God be for them, and how their behaviors and their characters were. First, how did they value the Quran in their hearts? The Quran is the Constitution of the Nation, and the foundation of its awakening. God, the Almighty, used it to cast out darkness into the light. The Glorious Quran had great impact on the lives of the companions, by memorising, reciting, understanding, practicing and applying it. For this reason, the dignified companion Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud, may God be pleased with him, who, as one of the scholars explained -while he was talking about the lives of the companions how the companions were with the Glorious Quran, so we can measure our situation- he said: “Each one of us, ‘i.e., the companions,’ if he memorised ten verses, he would go no further until he knew their meanings and practiced them.” Imagine, Allahu Akbar; he did not go beyond the ten verses until he knew the meaning of the words of God the Almighty, and until he practiced the words of Allah, the Exalted. Opposite to our reality now where individuals memorise the Quran and recite it by beautiful voices. It is true that the beautiful voice is religiously required; but a beautiful voice should not be his only concern in order to appear on satellites and radio stations to have thousands of people further around. No, this should not be your main concern. Your main and great concern should be to practice what is in the Book of Allah, the Almighty. Every one of us should carefully question himself, whether he practices the Book of Allah, the Far above.

Every time you read a verse, you should think of it and understand it. Have you applied it to the reality of your life? One verse in the Quran was practiced by the whole nation. It is the verse of fasting only, in Surah Al Baqarah “Ye who believe! Fasting is prescribed upon you as it was prescribed upon those before you, that ye may self-restraint.” However, how many verses were about Jihad? How many Surahs of the Quran, Surah Al Baqarah, Surah Al Maidah, Surah Al Anfal, Surah Al Tawbah, Surah Al Saf, Surah Mohamed [for fighting], Surah Al Ahzab and so many verses of the Quran are to interest people in Jihad, and urge them for Jihad; however, people or most people are not practicing them.

Thus worshipper of God, hold yourself accountable: what is the place of the Quran, the exulted word of God, in your heart; does it have a great influence; does it exist in your morals, in your behavior, and in your daily life? How many readers of the Quran are cursed by, God forbid, the Quran! He reads the verses about usury, but instead of following them, he deals with usury. Dear loved ones, the people of the Quran are preferred in this world and the hereafter. In this world, they lead in prayers. As our Prophet, peace be upon him, said “In prayer, the people are led by the one who memorises more of the book of God.” In the day after, they are also favoured. The respectable companion, Jaber Ibn Abdullah, may God be pleased with him, said “When we wanted to bury the dead, the ones killed in Uhud, they used to bury every two deceased in one grave. The Prophet, peace be upon him, would ask ‘who of them benefited more from the Quran? The one who did was buried first.” Look, may God protect you, how the people of the Quran are favoured in this world and in the hereafter.

In respect of the hereafter, as mentioned in Al-Tirmithi, the Prophet, peace be upon him, said “When the reader of the Quran is in Paradise, he is told to recite the verses of the Quran and that his status will be as high as the last verse he reached in the book of God.” Allahu Akbar! Dearly belove ones, we must hold ourselves very much accountable. Each verse we go through, we should read it, contemplate it, and meditate on it so we can resemble the unique first generation.

As for the companions, May God, the Almighty, bless them, they were not only memorising and practicing the Quran, but they were also seeking knowledge. They were very eager to seek knowledge because they knew that knowledge was of great importance for the human life; otherwise, how would the human being worship God; how would he distinguish between sin and obedience; between Sunnah and heresy unless they had known Islamic Law. The companions, May God, the Almighty, bless them, were the best example of loving, yearning, and eagerness in seeking knowledge. A good example was Abdullah Ibn ‘Amr, May God, the Almighty, bless him, due to the intensity of his commitment to knowledge, he said “I used to write everything the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, said until Quraish stopped me. They explained that the Messenger, peace be upon him, as a human might get happy and angry. I then stopped writing. I mentioned that to the Messenger of God, peace be upon him. The Prophet, peace be upon him said ‘Write,’ and he pointed out to his mouth, ‘Whatever comes out from this mouth is right,’ and I resumed writing everything.” As examples of their being keen on knowledge, they, May God, the Almighty, bless them, used to ask the Messenger of God, peace be upon him about everything.

The authentic Sunnah proved to us that a lot of questions were asked to our Messenger of God, peace be upon him. The companions used to get happy when a Bedouin would come from the desert because he would ask the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, and they would increasingly define their knowledge by these questions. This would also increase their comprehension (fiqh) and understanding of the religion of God, the Exalted. They were patient and endured hardships, travel, hunger, and hot weather to seek knowledge. This is the respectable companion Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud who said, “If I am told that a man has one Hadith, I go to him, and if he was sleeping, at noon for example, I sit down at the door in the sun and the oppressive heat until he comes out so I can get the Hadith from him.” Once, Ibn ‘Abbas, the cousin of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, was sitting at the door of a man who had a visitor until the visitor went out. The man was so surprised that Ibn ‘Abbas, the cousin of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, was sitting at the door, at noon and in the heat, and said “If you told me, I would have come out to you, you, the cousin of the Messenger of God, peace be upon him.” See the humility of the people of knowledge, Ibn ‘Abbas then replied “I am the one who should come and ask you.” This is not all about the people of knowledge. They are not like us these days. We collect books, collect degrees, collect and preserve certificates and preserve systems. This is not like that at all. Their main concern is how to work and gain from it. This is Abdullah Ibn Mas’ud, May God bless him, correcting our understanding, who said “Knowledge is not measured by repeating, so and so said, but knowledge is to fear God in one’s heart.” The person may have certificates and high-level positions, but he has no fear of God, the Most High. He distorts religion, makes changes and switches according to his desires and his fellows. Therefore, knowledge is not measured by requiring and collecting books, but by the fear of God in the heart of the worshipper.

This is Imam Malik, the Imam of Dar Al-Hijrah, may God have mercy on him, said, “The light of knowledge and wisdom is gifted by God’s will and not by volume of known issues.” Pay attention, May God take protect you, to this serious matter. We preserve knowledge, collect books, take sabbaticals, recommendations, and school certificates; however, knowledge has no vital or significant effect on our situation, in our lives, and in our ethics. Imam Hasan Al Basri, may God have mercy on him, said, “Shortly after one of our ancestors would seek knowledge, his prayers, his fear of God, his vision, and his way of talking would be affected.” Praise God, knowledge would affect his whole life. This is how they were, May God, the Most High, bless them.

In respect of their worship of God, they were great examples of strong worship. They worshipped God all the time, in good and bad times, in travel, in towns, at home and in the mosque, with people or alone. The question would be raised if they were not on that level when their role model was their Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him, who gave the most magnificent examples of strong worship of God. He used to stay up all night praying until his feet were swollen. ‘A`isha, May God bless her, would ask him “Oh Messenger of God, why you strain your self while God has forgiven your sins; the ones before and the ones after?” He said “Shouldn’t I be a thankful worshipper!” Allahu Akbar! Listen to this story; it is in Hadith Al Bukhari. Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar, the respectable companion, the worshipper, the performer of nocturnal prayers (Qiyam al-Layl), the faster, and the knowledgeable dreamed that two angles took him to Hell in a dream vision. He said “I saw Hell in the shape of a spring, and saw people whom I knew.

I said God forbid, God forbid, God forbid, and save me from Hell.” Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar told the story to his sister Hafsah, Um Al-Mu`mineen, the wife of the Prophet, peace be upon him, who said “Abdullah will be a good man if he performs the nocturnal prayers.” Look at the way of life of the companions; with this word, he was affected and the life of Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar had changed. It is not a speech, or lesson, or lecture, it was one word he heard from the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, and he was so much affected to the extend that Salem said “After he heard the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, he would not sleep at night, except a short while.” A direct practical application occurred to show how affected he was. As for us, we hear thousands of lectures, speeches, and lessons, but how much of them we have applied in our way of life and behaviour. Muhammad Ibn Talhah is another respectable companion, who used to be called the prostrated. Do you know why? This is because of his large number of prayers and intensity of his worship of God. Abdullah Ibn Zubair was another example of performing the nocturnal prayers, as it was quoted by Abdullah Ibn ‘Umar. Nafi’ was asked about the worship of Ibn ‘Umar at his house. Some people when they are among others, at mosques, in some seasonal occasions such as the month of Ramadan, or when they have a kind of crisis such as being in jail, they become ascetic, worshippers, fasters, and remembering God, but once the occasion is over, you will find this kind of people, like the damned devil, God forbid. Nafi’ was asked about the kind of worship of Ibn ‘Umar, about what he used to do at home. He said “Unbearable.” It means that Ibn ‘Umar was a great worshipper. Nafi’ continued “He performs ablution at every prayer and the Quran is in between.

This means that at his house he is either praying, or worshiping, or praising.” Thus were the companions. Their life was a chain of consecutive rings in obedience of God, the Most High. Once he finishes one act of worship, he will start another. His life is consecutive links of a chain of worshipping God, the Exalted, even when traveling. When we look at our way of life, we find that we are being lazy in performing worship and obedience. Some of the companions had enough strength.

For example, Ibn Malikah, the respectable successor, God’s Mercy for him, said “I accompanied Ibn ‘Abbas traveling from Mecca to Madinah. When it was time to rest, I used to relax and sleep, but Ibn ‘Abbas used to get up at midnight and pray.” Even when traveling, they were not skipping the nocturnal prayers. Another great companion, Hamzah Ibn ‘Amr used to ask the Messenger of God, peace be upon him, “Is it considered a sin to fast when traveling, if I have enough strength to do so?” The Messenger of God, peace be upon him answered “It is a permission from God given to you not to fast [when traveling], but if you do, there is no sin.” Oh worshipper of God, be very cautious that God, the Most High, the Great, Who is aware of everything, Who sees inside your heart and knows, if you are trying to get away from your obedience and religious duties. You should have love, eagerness, and desire in worship and obedience. Thus were the companions, May God blessing them.

It is of God’s mercy to have given us different ways of worshipping him and obeying him. Doors to obtaining virtues are plenty and varied. This is because of the glorious God’s compassion for us. The Prophet, peace be upon him, said “Every good act is a charity. Worshippers, try to gain virtues through one of these opportunities and doors even if it was a simple thing.”

How were the companions in their fear, awe, or apprehension of God? They were an example. Their motto and virtue was all due to their fear of God, the Exalted. This is why God has mentioned them in the Quran and praised them. When they realised they were mentioned in the Quran they prostrated and cried. Allahu Akbar! The companions had so much faith in their hearts; they thought of their sins to be bigger. They weren’t like us now: We don’t pay too much heed to our wrongdoings because we’ve invented labels “This is a small one, a big one, a layer, a deep core, and a great heresy brought by our current times.” They are relating heresy to a layer and a core: A great heresy that God has created no origin! When we look at the real companions, we see that they were glorifying God. Whoever gives importance to the signs of God is doing so from a pious heart, and whoever gives importance to sins is a virtuous person to God.

Al Bukhari said in his book: Anas Ibn Malik, may God be pleased with him, addressed the Tabi’een and said “You are doing deeds that are more detailed than the hairs we used to count during the time of Prophet Mohamed, peace be upon him. It was one of the most exhausting things to do even though you’re counting the simplest of things.” What would Anas Ibn Malik see if he came upon all the Muslims now? What can he say? God’s Shari’a has been omitted from Muslims’ lives. We brought Eastern and Western constitutions to enforce on Muslims. These are rancid rules! By God, they are rancid! Rancid! Rancid! We make Muslims responsible for it. What would Anas Ibn Malik say when he sees the reality of Muslims, their countries invaded by Crusaders, the Arabs desecrated, and the sacred polluted? What would Anas Ibn Malik say when he sees all the infidel satellite stations invading Muslim homes to spoil faith, morals, and belief? What would Anas Ibn Malik, may God be pleased with him, say when he realises the reality of Muslims when he see the usurious banks spread everywhere? What will he say about the banks that have fought God and his Prophet, the grooming taking place, and unveilings everywhere? What will he say? If Anas Ibn Malik sees the reality, life, morals, and courts of Muslims now, he may get a heart attack and die from it!

Do we glorify matters, Shari’a, and orders of God in our hearts, dear ones? When we exalt God’s orders we show our proof of his glory. God asks why we don’t place his orders in reverence. Unfortunately, no one glorifies God or give importance to sin. If done, it would create guilt, repentance, remorse, cries, and surrender of oneself to God. You need to make a big deal out of mistakes and watch out for death of heart.

The companions have given us examples through their Jihad. The most prominent characteristic of the companions, even with their varying ranks and knowledge, is their love for Jihad and fighting for the sake of God. They had passion and longing for martyrdom. That was the reality of the companions.

They loved Jihad and missed it. The Seerah literature tells of the Prophet, peace be upon him, examining the companions before an invasion. He made children turn back when they wanted to fight. Can you imagine youngsters longing for Jihad? Youngsters! We have big people, older people, scholars, sheikhs, worshippers, and students of knowledge that want nothing to do with Jihad! By God, it’s amazing! Of the youngsters that the Prophet returned, peace be upon him, was Rafi’ Ibn Al Khadeej, Zaid Ibn Thabet, Zaid Ibn Arqam, and Ibn ‘Umar (May God be pleased with him).

Listen to this situation so you can understand how they were. How were they? How were the companions when it came to Jihad? Ask yourself “How do I feel about Jihad? Do I love Jihad? Do I wish for Jihad? Do I miss it? Am I one of those negligent ones?” Listen to this amazing story! ‘Umair Ibn Abi Waqqas was one of the companions and he was young. I believe that was his name. I believe it was in the invasion of Badr where he was disappearing behind larger men so that the Prophet won’t see him. The Prophet made him leave which made ‘Umair cry. He cried people! Why? Because he wanted to go to Jihad and the Prophet refused! We have people now that laugh and are happy because they didn’t participate in Jihad. It is low character and a great tragedy for a person to be happy because they won’t go to Jihad. This is a characteristic of a hypocrite. It is even mentioned in the Quran “The deserters were happy in their retreat against the Prophet’s wishes” and when asked they talked about the heat of war. They were told “The fires in hell are far hotter! but they realise not” That’s the problem!

What does the Prophet say about this? Beware not to fall into the following description. In Sahih Muslim: “Whoever doesn’t fight, or talk himself into doing it, will die!” For what: for a division in faith or following? No! He died due to hypocrisy! O worshipper of God, don’t fabricate your wealth of knowledge, swearing by the Quran, flaunting your fame among satellite channels, your good position, that you have all the degrees, and status so not to think about Jihad. It doesn’t matter because you have the characteristics of a hypocrite. It was the Prophet who said these words.

The companions have cried while young! The Prophet saw the young man ‘Umair and his heart felt pity so ‘Umair ended up participating in the war. Allahu Akbar!

The companions had pride in Jihad and invasion. Abdullah Ibn Abi Awfa in Al Sahihain said “We were in a total of seven invasions with the Prophet and we ate locusts.” They were so proud and counted it as one of their greatest achievements! If the Imam Al Dhahabi translated the words for one of the companions, he would say their best achievements are in them witnessing all events like the battles of Uhud, Hunain, and Badr. They were filled with pride for fighting alongside the Prophet of God. Another companion called Rafi’ Ibn Khadeej says he took part in fifteen invasions. There are people who are 30-40 years students of knowledge, books, lectures, and education who have never been in a single battle. They’ve never fought the Russians, Serbs, or the Crusaders. The companions were proud while others count it as a shameful act. They say “Beware of being a terrorist! Don’t be a terrorist, radical, or have deviant thoughts!” So now a person thinking of Jihad has deviant thoughts even though a person is regarded to have apostate characteristics for not thinking of Jihad. Why is that? It’s because he doesn’t care or think about Jihad. That’s how the companions were. How where they? Love for Jihad used to flow through their blood and souls. God is great!

If we claim to love the companions and want to follow their teachings, why don’t you follow their love for Jihad? Why do you leave Jihad? Leaving Jihad is a great catastrophe. In fact, all the problems that have occurred for Muslims in the past have been because Jihad was absent. The Prophet, God’s blessings and peace upon him, had said that the nations are all wishing the worst for us. The Prophet, peace be upon him, showed the reason for disgrace in a Muslim’s reality is due to giving up Jihad and settling for life. That is the reality. Our reality is that all these people have left this great pillar, Jihad.

As far as the companions are concerned and their prayers, they didn’t leave the world in apostasy and darkness just to pray. They were very active in calling for the prayer to God. God said that there is no better way to speak than to invite people to the faith, do a good deed, and refer to oneself as a Muslim. God said that we are the best nation derived from people. Why are we the best nation derived from people? Is it because we have built homes, built castles, rode fancy cars, and attained respectful degrees? We are the best nation because we promote virtue and prohibit vice. The stipulation is that we promote virtue and prohibit vice to be the best nation.

The Prophet, peace be upon him, was teaching the companions and injecting in their hearts a love for the call. When Malik Ibn al Huwaireeth came to the Prophet, he was still a young man, and he stayed with the Prophet for twenty days. What did the Prophet tell them? He told them to go to their families, order them, and teach them. He also said many other things including “Teach them how to pray like I do.” Then the Prophet, peace be upon him, tells the companions they have to teach other people, mix with other people, act in kindness, abolish the forbidden, and not be satisfied with the current situation of Muslims. This has caused many lazy people to back away from these instructions and leave the call to God. They left promotion of virtue and prohibition of vice to God’s mercy. So my brother, try to act in kindness, prevent vice, and pray to God for wisdom and successful preaching.

Even if you give out tapes or books, there are many people who were guided because of tapes. They are now daa’iyah (Da’wah leaders), Sheikhs, students, scholars, and Mujahidin because of a tape. A great good would be done if all these beneficial tapes were spread among the people. The tape “Muffarequ Al Jama’ah” by Sheikh Khaled Al Rashid, may God reward him, has been beneficial to many people. So try, my Muslim brother, to send out these small books or advantageous tapes so you can become one of the people of the call, promote virtue, and prohibit vice.

Finally my kind brothers, what were the companions like in good character? They have knocked on every door of kindness, may God be pleased with them. If we ever asked how they were, we would see that proof in the Quran, prayers, Jihad, among students of knowledge, piety, self-control, and devoutness. They were an example of loyalty, brotherhood, honesty, and kindness to people. Why won’t they be like that? They graduated from the Prophet’s school, peace be upon him.

God has even said to our Prophet “You are of great character.” Imagine the great and exalted God saying “You are of great character!” When the Prophet was asked about the most common reasons that cause people to go to hell, he said “The mouth and pleasure.” When asked what allows people to go to heaven, he said “Piety and good character.” The Prophet also said that the best trait in us is in our good character. Who is that person who is our best? The Seerah is filled with information about the companions and their good deeds and behaviours, effects (on others), honesty, and many sacrifices. We wanted to take a summarised look at the companions’ lives so we can abide by their example.

With that: I ask God for forgiveness, God’s blessings and peace for the Prophet of God; bless the Prophet, his people, and companions.
